That was Kilted September

I’m home from OKEHAMPTON and EXERCISE NOBLE LEDGER which you can read all about on the ARRC’s website if you’re interested. I was actually in Devon in a side bit:

The photo is from ARRC’s open source Flickr account for those that worry about ‘security’.

Anyway I arrived in Devon on 26 September after a nightmare drive through rivers and floods and traffic jams. I was kilted and I wore my kilt in the bar several times up to the 30th.

I’ve no doubt that several people probably thought I was grandstanding but I suppose being a  multinational organization they are used to people being different. Anyone I explained the KTKC concept to was fully supportive. Unfortunately I didn’t get any snaps to liven this blog up with.

I did take a picture of this rather angry dragon which was trying to get into our secret NATO HQ. It must have thought that the risk of drowning was greater than the risk of being trodden on.

To be honest I’m not sure it is a gecko and salamander or a large tadpole. There were certainly a lot of frogs joining us in the tent to escape the dreadfull weather. Squashed frogs under the flooring may also account for the interesting smell.

KTKC What next?

I think KTKC UK was a success albeit limited. The concept worked, people understood the point – so next September I’d like it to be bigger, better, shinier and more ambitious.

I intend to organise a headline event, probably in CATTERICK GARRISON – as that’s where I am. I’d like to think others might organise other things up and down the country.

Remember – A kilt is not just for September.

I don’t intend to blog regularly but If i have anything relevant to say I will.

Out of the office.

I’ll be away in Devon on exercis for a few weeks. I will continue to blog from my iPhone but most army camps have rubbish reception and I don’t know how successful my attempts to upload pictures and notes will be.

It’s still raining – The drowned rat Hash in Knaresborough

What an exciting evening I’ve had. It’s been raining here in Catterick (and pretty much the rest of the country) since Sunday. Our local motorway, the A1(M) is closed due to flooding. Any way I set off for Knaresborough, and a Hash, via the back roads through places like Masham (pronounced Maz -ham) and Ripon. The River Ure is overflowing it’s banks and I had to explore the amphibious qualities of the Suzuki Grand Vitara – very good if your asking.

The Hash was a bit of a wash out as the hare couldn’t lay a trail without it being washed a way – we just ran from one spot to another for an hour or so in the rain.

The journey home was almost uneventful. I had to make a couple of diversions due to roads being closed but the route eventually went on was large puddles rather than fording rivers – until I was withing a few miles of home. I was climbing what seemed like a bloody great mountain coming into Scotton when it plateaued out.. There seemed to be a little surface water so i slowly an confidently drove through it. It got deeper and deeper. The lights went out and the car lost power. Fortunately the bow wave subsided and the power came back and I was able to make progress – more slowly.

Its’ raining.

The day started with some interesting news, KTKC UK got a mention on Soldier Systems Daily which is a US military kit blog where I 1st read about KTKC in the US.

Back to the mundane. It’s raining cats and dogs. Unfortunately I needed to clean the car out in preparation for a long trip I’m going on later this week. Our charming Postlady came by to deliver a parcel and I got her to take a couple of snaps of me.

A Sunday run with the Yorkshire Hash House Harriers.

Spent the evening at ‘Jack Tar Hotel’. Much gratitude to them. Awoke with a bit of a hangover and had a diet breaking bacon bap mmmm. Then JT drove us to the ‘Old Dolpin Inn’ on the outskirts of Bradford to RV with the Yorkshire Hash. Nothing like a fresh winters morning and lungs full bracing cold air to really confirm that you have a hangover.

A good circle in the pub after.

Yorkshire H3 have a ‘shite’ raffle after their circles. I won this rather fetching duster.

Tickle me, tickle me, you know where...

On the way home we stopped off for a final sober farewell to Knicker Elastic. Note Jack Tar’s kilted t-shirt.

Saturday night out in Knaresborough

I had a great evening out in Knaresborough. Started with a farewell do for Knicker Elastic from the Harrogate Hash who is going back to Australia and then various pubs in Knaresborough with a variety of beers and live bands. Ended with a diet breaking fish supper.

About and about – Name cards

Took the Harley to be MOT’d this morning. It was cold and wet. I went leathered up. This afternoon I went into Richmond to collect some KTKC name cards.

I also spoke to a number of people including the gentleman in the photo who is from some French islands somewhere exotic and had never seen or heard of the kilt before.
